| Certificate: |
The signature of Clifford “Tiff” Garcia on this Certificate of
Authenticity, as well as the embossed ‘chop’ placed over the signature,
gives witness, declaring his brother, Jerry Garcia, the sole creator of
the original art.
“In Chair” is one of a series of five oil paintings created by
Jerry Garcia as part of his training at the San Francisco Art
Institute in the late 1950s, studying under Elmer Bischoff,
one of the Masters of the Bay Area Figurative Art period
(1950-1964).
Though his visual art impulse was overtaken by his later
musical career, Garcia produced drawings and cartoons
throughout his life. The oil paintings and his study with
Bischoff, offer a clue to the well springs of Garcia’s later
computer graphic work, and to the tension between abstract
and figurative expression present in his whole creative output.
At the Art Institute, then called the California School of Fine Arts,
Jerry was studying the graphic arts with a focused passion and
commitment, in a milieu and at a time when the masterpieces of
Kesey, Kerouac and the beat poets, were at the forefront of Bay Area culture.
“..(Bischoff) deacon of West Coast painters, justly celebrated for his
lifelong navigation of the ‘tightrope’ between abstract painting’s sensual materiality and the ethical implications of a figurative art.”
Caroline Jones,
Associate Professor of the History of Art, Stanford University |

This document should be considered as an asset and regarded accordingly. It has been a common practice to store a Certificate of Authenticity inside an envelope taped to the back of the frame. Common sense would point out the total loss of the art work if it should become a victim of theft: Both the work itself, and it’s documentation are lost. Storing this Certificate separately greatly reduces the market value of a piece of art, as well as retaining a record establishing factual data as evidence of identification and ownership.
Please protect this document securely. If this Certificate of Authenticity is lost or stolen, it cannot be replaced.
